Every first time in the adventure of motherhood is moving: the first time you see his or her little face, the first time you breastfeed him or her, the first bottle, the first steps… But if there’s a moment when I’m overwhelmed with emotions, it’s the first day of school. It represents so many things: taking a big step towards independence, learning in so many fields beyond school, making friends, building memories for life…
On Monday, Théo starts school. Three days before his fifth birthday, he’s more than ready; eager to learn, excited to follow in his sister’s footsteps and join his best friend, happy to grow up. And you can imagine how I feel: excited, nostalgic, sentimental, happy that he’s taking another step forward; I have, in short, that jumble of contradictory feelings that characterize motherhood.
But above all, I am delighted to see him so happy and to know that his sister will be in the classroom next door to support him. I really wanted to keep a souvenir of this moment. So we went back to school in style: we picked out new clothes and backpacks at one of our favorite stores: Stadtlandkind; I gathered some of the things that remind me of my childhood school (chewing gums, soap bubbles, a skateboard…) and we went to the school where Inés goes to Spanish class to take some pictures.
We had a great time and I saw them both so happy that on Monday it will be much easier to give them that last kiss before they enter the school door.
